Her move to San Francisco in 2013 for a student exchange program set the stage for her musical career. Settling in Oakland, she began performing at open mics and collaborating with local musicians. A key moment came when she met Jackson Phillips of Day Wave at the bookstore where she worked. Their collaboration shaped much of Hazel’s early sound, with Phillips co-writing many songs.
Hazel English formed a band under her stage name and played their first show in 2015, opening for Craft Spells in San Francisco. That same year, she introduced her music to the world with three songs on SoundCloud: "Never Going Home," "It's Not Real," and "Fix."
